Teaching from the Windows

St. Leo I
In 2000, when Beta Studios took the stunning slides that adorn these pages, the idea of a coffee-table book, which featured the windows, began to take shape.

Soon Fr. Prieur was in the library researching Jewish wedding customs for the window The Wedding of Mary and Joseph or inquiring about Pope Leo’s papal tiara or St. Jerome’s cardinal’s attire. Symbols, colours, posture and gestures all held a deep, rich meaning. As I read through the book I could once again hear Fr. Prieur’s enthusiasm as he related each new discovery or mystery uncovered in the windows.

Fr. Prieur’s commentary is a perfect blend of meticulous research and eloquent description. It is an inspiring reminder that all things beautiful reflect and reveal the infinite beauty of God.

Artistry in the Windows

The motto of the Ancient Guild of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass is “God give us your light.” Just as the Lord has provided us with his light to illuminate the stained glass windows of St. Peter’s Seminary chapel, the Lord has also blessed us with this wonderful book. Through his extensive research, Father Prieur brings meaning and light to the symbolism of these windows. This book is not only an important reference for students of ecclesiastic iconography, but it will also bring greater meaning to anyone viewing the windows.

Inspiration
With the magnificent photography of Beta Photos here in London, Ontario, and Fr. Prieur’s commentary, we are able to share this treasure from the heart of the seminary with the hope that others will be inspired by these windows and come to know better the riches of our Christian faith.
Rev. W. McGrattan
Rector, St. Peter’s Seminary, London, Ontario

The Aquinas chapel … is one of the most beautifully designed and outfitted such spaces in the country … [B]eyond the stories in the windows and the figures they portray, there are deeper and deeper layers of meaning to be discovered in the Aquinas windows, even for an accredited professor of theology
